Laurent Ferrier is among the most laureled independent watchmakers in recent years, and for good reason. The brand seems to effortlessly blend shapes, colours and mechanics into fascinating yet elegantly discreet watches, even if we’re dealing with a world timer or a tourbillon watch. A prime example is the Sport Auto, one of Frank Geelen’s (our founder) all-time favourites. But there’s more to the brand than that. Every now and then, it also dares to get creative, most often in terms of colour. Case in point is Laurent Ferrier’s latest, the Classic Tourbillon in teal green, a new edition of what was once the brand’s very first watch, created all the way back in 2010.

The design of the Classic collection has always been absolutely gorgeous, with a refined profile and subtle yet appealing details. The pebble-like form of the case, bezel and crystal, the shape of the lugs, the ball-shaped crown and so on, it’s all very lovely stuff! Here it measures 41mm in diameter and 12.50mm to the top of the domed sapphire crystal, and is crafted from 950 platinum top to bottom. That makes it slightly larger than its non-tourbillon time-only siblings, albeit still extremely wearable.

The biggest change to this iteration of the wonderfully elegant Classic Tourbillon is the dial, that much is obvious. The white gold base has been covered with rich teal green Grand Feu enamel, which shifts from a blue-ish green to deep green depending on how the light hits it. The colour is lovely, albeit a bit challenging to capture in images. It’s finished with elongated white Grand Feu enamel Roman numerals and a sky blue Grand Feu enamel minutes track. The recessed sub-dial for the small seconds features a bevelled and polished white gold flange, and the Assegai hands, as well as the small seconds hand, are crafted from white gold.

To give this new Classic Tourbillon a more contemporary touch around the back, the in-house manually wound calibre LF619.01 is finished in dark ruthenium, with straight graining on the bridges. However, as with most Laurent Ferrier watches, discretion is key, so the tourbillon escapement, with a head-to-tail mounted double balance spring, is only visible from the reverse side. It is held in place by the signature openworked bridge, which only slightly obscures the view. Fully wound, it delivers a robust 80-hour power reserve. For the rest, it’s gorgeous as ever, with the straight click spring for the winding mechanism, bevelled edges along the bridges, and so on.

To extend the play of colours beyond the case, Laurent Ferrier puts this teal green Classic Tourbillon on a forest green alligator leather strap with tone-on-tone Alcantara lining, and a platinum pin buckle or double folding clasp. As is custom with the Série Atelier watches, it’s available as an online exclusive only, for a price of CHF 195,000 excluding taxes. And yes, that is house-buying money for most people, but Ferrier’s tourbillon watches have always been among the finest on the independent watchmaking scene, and this one proves it once more.
