It might be owned by Montblanc, but Minerva is a true diamond that needs attention.

Hidden in the Swiss Jura mountains, in the small village of Villeret, is probably one of the most impressive manufactures we’ve encountered. A true hidden gem, a discreet diamond of traditional watchmaking. The name of this manufacture: Minerva. The brand was founded over 165 years ago and has gained an impressive reputation among a small circle of collectors, specifically for its superb chronograph movements. In recent years, Minerva was acquired by the Richemont Group and integrated into Montblanc in 2007. But what surprised us the most is that, despite its ownership, Minerva has remained one of the few places where genuine hand-finishing is practised, where traditions are kept alive and where the human touch brings a unique appeal to collectors.

In this in-depth video, we visit the Minerva manufacture in Villeret, a place of its own, not to be confused with the classic production of Montblanc. We’ll be talking with Laurent Lecamp, Global Managing Director for both Montblanc and Minerva, to learn more about precision chronographs, hand-finished mechanical movements, and artisanal watchmaking. Valued for its chronograph and high level of detail, the spirit of Minerva is very much alive. Even today, movements are made in-house, including the hairsprings, and all decoration steps are performed by hand, utilising ancient techniques… Something rare enough that needs to be seen. Travel with us and discover what makes Minerva truly special.

  1. Easily the best hand finished watches of all the group brands. Literally embarrasses the “Holy Trinity” and Lange. Even saying that, it’s not even close. Like semi-pro compared to be big leagues.

  2. I watched this excellent feature online earlier today. Thanks the Monochrome team and Brice for your marvelous job! There are some clips on certain small details during the watch making process in the film which is rarely seen before. I’m glad that Minerva seems to be quite generous and open about that, as many other brands would treat such things as “industrial secrets” and won’t allow them to be filmed or revealed to the public.

  3. I am sure it’s awesome, but how is it better than my Breitling B15, which costs a fraction? Even Chinese movements look fascinating and they can be had for a few hundred.

  4. You said “Even Chinese movements look fascinating and they can be had for a few hundred.” Really? So why did you buy a Breitling if you admire the supposed Chinese quality? You have to compare like with like. And in terms of authentic craftsmanship, Minerva is incomparable. Have a nice day and long life to the authentic craftmanship.
