Tissot’s PRX Grendizer watches are one of the editions that vividly embody the fusion of pop culture and Swiss watchmaking. What started in 2024 as a tribute to Go Nagai’s legendary anime UFO Robot Grendizer now returns in 2025 with a darker, dramatic sequel, the Black PVD-coated PRX Grendizer 50th Anniversary Special Edition. Limited to 1,975 pieces, this new Tissot celebrates half a century of the Japanese space hero who first captured imaginations, yours truly included, in 1975.

The PRX collection itself is no stranger to nostalgia, also born in the 1970s. Revived by Tissot in 2021, it has become one of the brand’s most successful designs, combining the geometry of a vintage integrated sports watch with modern finishing and mechanics, made accessible. In 2024, the collection collided with anime history in the first PRX Grendizer Special Edition. That watch placed a glowing outline of Grendizer’s bust on a gradient blue dial, discreet by day but luminous by night, paired with the dependable Powermatic 80 calibre. It was a faithful, lighthearted homage that quickly found a following.

The new 50th anniversary model takes a different stance. Housed in the familiar 40mm PRX case, now fully coated in black PVD, it leans into a retro-futurist aesthetic, equal parts Swiss watchmaking and Japanese sci-fi. The case remains water-resistant to 100m and is topped with a sapphire crystal and has a mineral display caseback.

On the dial, Grendizer dominates in a sculptural pose, fist thrust forward as though wanting to break through the sapphire crystal. Intricate engraving, layered textures, and Super-LumiNova illumination bring the figure to life, glowing yellow in the dark. His eyes, yellow painted for intensity, echo the energy of the original anime. In a cool finishing touch, the golden seconds hand takes the form of Grendizer’s Double Harken weapon. Around the bezel, a special engraving dedicated to the 1975 series completes the theme.

As expected, the PRX Grendizer 50th Anniversary runs on the Powermatic 80 calibre which offers 80 hours of autonomy, has a Nivachron balance spring for anti-magnetism, and boasts robustness suited for everyday wear. Visible through the transparent caseback, the rotor is decorated with another image of Grendizer, engraved as if the robot were guarding the mechanism. Each watch is individually numbered, with “Limited Edition 1 of 1975” engraved on the steel back.

The watch is worn on the PRX’s signature integrated bracelet, here executed in black PVD-coated steel with a tapering single-link design and triple-blade folding clasp. A quick-change system allows easy swapping to alternate straps if desired. The Tissot PRX Grendizer 50th Anniversary Special Edition comes in a UFO Spazer-inspired capsule, nested in a gold-and-black outer box, accompanied by drawings created exclusively for this edition and hand-signed by Go Nagai. The price is CHF 895 or EUR 1,095.
