Redesigned Inside and Out, The new Longines PrimaLuna Moonphase Automatic
With its refreshed case design and dial, the PrimaLuna moon phase models are upgraded with mechanical movements.
Longines introduced its PrimaLuna collection of women’s watches in 2009 with a name designed to evoke the romantic nature of the Moon. However, unlike the PrimaLuna time-and-date models powered by automatic calibres, the PrimaLunas featuring moon phase complications were fitted with quartz movements that might not appeal to women who prefer mechanical movements. For 2025, Longines not only refreshes the design of the PrimaLuna case and dial but also ups its mechanical game by fitting automatic movements inside the new 34mm Moonphase references, now equipped with a date.
The first batch of eight PrimaLuna models to be released in September inaugurates the new case design. The feminine 34mm case is entirely polished and has a height of 11.6mm. Its gently domed and curving surfaces merge into one another, creating a sensation of fluidity. Variety is the name of the game, and the new case is available in stainless steel or bi-metal steel & gold (the two-tone models come with a choice of rose gold or yellow gold on the bezel and crown). For a splash of luxury, the bezel of the steel model can be selected with 58 brilliant-cut diamonds.
Marking a first for the collection, the bezel of the flagship celestial blue mother-of-pearl model is set with 48 blue sapphires in a subtle gradient formation. It is paired with a matching blue alligator leather strap.
Versatility is pursued all the way to the strap options. The PrimaLuna can be ordered with elegant alligator leather straps – in blue, red or burgundy – or a sleek steel bracelet. Although it is not technically an integrated bracelet, the new steel bracelet sits flush with the case and features short, domed, half-moon links. The only model that does not come with strap options is the one featuring a blue mother-of-pearl dial.
Available with classic sunray-brushed silver dials featuring prominent Roman numerals and a recessed central area, the PrimaLuna also comes with white or blue mother-of-pearl dials, complemented by 14 diamond indices. All the references share the moon phase complication at 6 o’clock, now enhanced with a pointer date and classic baton-style hour and minute hands. Powered by the L899.5 automatic calibre (ETA A31.L91 made exclusively for Longines) with a silicon balance spring, the movement delivers a robust 72-hour power reserve.
Prices vary substantially. The straightforward steel model with a steel bracelet retails for EUR 2,850, while the bi-metal steel and gold references have a price tag of EUR 6,200. The mother-of-pearl references range from EUR 3,400 for the white dial and diamond indices to EUR 6,600 for the blue dial with diamond indices and sapphire-set bezel.
