Hamilton has always had deep ties to aviation. From synchronising the first U.S. airmail flights in the 1910s to timing pilots through WWI and WWII, and the jet age, the brand’s Khaki Aviation collection continues this legacy with watches designed for professionals and enthusiasts. The Khaki Aviation X-Wind was developed in 2005 with aerobatic champion Nicolas Ivanoff, and it introduced the world’s first wristwatch drift-angle calculator, a tool enabling pilots to determine and correct for crosswinds during flight. Twenty years later, the X-Wind remains one of Hamilton’s technically distinctive lines, with oversized cases, rotating internal bezels, and bold displays with reliable movements. Now, the collection expands with two new references: the Khaki Aviation X-Wind Day Date Auto in a deep green “Northern Lights” dial, and the Khaki Aviation X-Wind Day Date Auto Chrono in a vivid “Aviation Blue.”

Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Wind Day Date Auto

The first new model is the Day Date Auto, a 45mm stainless steel pilot’s watch that leans on clean functionality and bold colour. At 12.8mm thick, the case has presence, the screw-down crown and sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating make the watch durable and legible. Water-resistance is 100m.

The X-Wind’s system of bezels allows for the calculation of drift angles in flight. The crown at 4 o’clock controls the upper internal bezel, while the crown at 2 o’clock adjusts the lower one. A dedicated window highlights the reading of the lower scale for clarity. To complete the calculation, the external bezel must also be aligned. Using this system requires knowledge of wind speed, wind direction, and the distinction between geographic and magnetic bearings, information essential for accurate navigation.

The green dial takes inspiration from the Northern Lights, with large Arabic numerals, a day-date display at 9 o’clock, and nickel hands with Super-LumiNova for excellent visibility. Despite its colourful presentation, the layout remains straightforward and functional – a hallmark of the X-Wind line. The watch is powered by the Hamilton H-30 automatic movement, ETA C07.111 base, with an 80-hour power reserve and a Nivachron balance spring for anti-magnetic resistance. It offers hours, minutes, central seconds, and day-date indication. A brown leather strap with rivets completes the package, closed with a pin buckle for a vintage-inspired aviation look.

Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Wind Day Date Auto Chrono

The second addition is the Day Date Auto Chronograph, housed in a slightly smaller but thicker 44mm stainless steel case with a height of 15.6mm. It carries the same tool-watch appearance as the Day Date Auto: screw-down crown at 9 o clock flanked by chronograph pushers, the crown at 4 o’clock to operate the upper internal bezel and the crown at 2 o’clock to operate the lower internal bezel, sapphire with double AR, and 100m of water resistance.

The dial comes in Aviation Blue, with a layout that places the chronograph counters at 12 and 6 o’clock, with running seconds at 3 o’clock and a day-date display at 9. Numerals and hands with Super-LumiNova ensure good readability.

Powering this edition is the Hamilton H-21 automatic chronograph calibre, an evolution of the ETA/Valjoux 7750, with a 60-hour power reserve and the Nivachron balance spring. It drives hours, minutes, small seconds, chronograph functions, and a day-date complication. The watch is fitted with the same brown leather strap with rivets for the stylistic continuity across the new pair of models.
